Reading payment timing without overreacting

How to notice unusual remittance patterns — early pays, splits, and sudden schedule changes — without treating every variance as fraud.

Calendar and planning documents on a desk

Payment verification is not a hunt for drama. Most timing variances have dull explanations: early settlement for a discount, a split across two invoices, a holiday week that compressed approvals. The skill is noticing which variances deserve a conversation.

Patterns worth a second look

  • A vendor who was paid on net-45 for a year suddenly paid in seven days without a discount clause
  • One invoice settled as three round-number remittances
  • A schedule change that arrives in the same week as a bank-detail update

Patterns that usually wait

Single late payments during known plant shutdowns, or one early pay clearly tied to a written early-settlement offer. Document the explanation in the AP file so the next reviewer is not rediscovering it.

When timing questions stack up, a scoped payment verification engagement can sample a quarter without freezing the pay run.
